“Ridiculous…what kind of soul would wish for such a deathly world? Nothing dies, nothing is born. How can a planet that doesn’t even blink be said to have any “life”? Is this the salvation He has promised you? I’ll tell you what these humans who threaten the life of the Earth need…it’s to return to their souls’ origin. Reclaim that time of impulsive souls, full of joie de vivre. A time of death and birth, destruction and creation…bring back to the land that spirit of freedom. Then you’ll find that humans will be allowed to become a part of nature. Quite unlike humans as they are now…living off the fat of the land, alienated from nature.

I say let the Schwarzwelt loose! That’s the way to regain your freedom, your harmony with the earth. When the earth is filled with demons, the life of a human will again have worth. Your days will be beautiful ones, where you polish your souls in a world led by free gods. And if a spirit among you in that world becomes depraved, may you bid him adieu. There is no worth to a spirit who fears death and clings so covetously to life. Right now, you are bent on earning a chance to escape certain death so you might change the future. But what form should that future take? Do not neglect that…"

An Overview

A long time ago, the universe was in Chaos. Humans existed alongside the old gods, spirits born from the Earth with terrible powers, who humans worshiped. They paid tribute to them for numerous reasons; protection, power, any kind of desire they had could be fulfilled, so long as the god was powerful enough and the sacrifice acceptable.

One day, this Chaos was interrupted by the arrival of a new figure. He was more powerful than any other, a manifestation of the "Great Will", this being the collective will of the entire universe given form. He was a tyrannical, arrogant King without a name, simply God. He used his power to strip the old gods of their original forms, reducing many of them to the demons you might know today, before casting them to Hell. Humans were then taken under God's rule, legions of Angels created to serve Heaven's will guiding and punishing humanity all in accordance to the Great Will.

Chief amongst the Angels, barring God himself, were a pair of Angels who stood second only to Him, rivaling each other in power. These Angels were brothers, known as Helel and Satan. Satan was a judge, appearing before humanity in a number of different ways, tempting them to sin - it was he who offered the apple to Eve, testing their loyalty to God, and he would continue to do so to many people, all to test their loyalty to God. Those who failed his test would be punished by the executioner, Helel, who tormented or outright destroyed sinners for their transgressions.

But Helel, created to be more beautiful and powerful than any other Angel, became proud. With pride came doubt, doubt of his own creator and doubt of the ways he went about his rule. Helel believed that the strict rules of living beneath God's divine will were too harsh. Many humans, while flawed, were still useful to keep around - it was a waste to kill them just for a few mistakes. Over time this doubt grew into a belief that God was flawed. Helel convinced a third of the heavenly host to turn against their creator and wage war against him; the battle was terrible, but in the end, Helel was defeated by and cast out of Heaven by the Archangel Michael. Stripped of his divinity, Helel became Lucifer, the first of the fallen angels.

Cast down into Hell with the former old gods, they recognized him as something more powerful than any other amongst them. Lucifer was crowned their king, and seeing that they too had been mistreated at the hands of God, he vowed to stand against his Father and any who sided with him, planning to overthrow him once and for all so that the universe could return to the way it once was, cruel and capricious perhaps, but ultimately a place of true freedom.

Personality

The most important thing to realize about Lucifer from the getgo is he was designed to be a weapon. In his canon, Angels aren't very emotive - some portrayals of them, the fourth entry in the series specifically, are essentially robots save for the highest of the order. Individuality isn't something God is fond of, so he creates his servants to be single minded, cold and often without any free will to speak of.

So Lucifer developed some semblance of individuality by himself, perhaps most easily compared to a glitch in the system. He was hailed as the most beautiful of all the Angels, as Satan was a grotesque monster by comparison, and his power was rivaled only by Satan and surpassed by God himself. This had a profound effect on him, eventually causing him to develop something beyond his programming as it were: Pride. He prided himself on being the strongest(almost) and most beautiful Heaven had to offer.

With this in mind, it's not difficult to imagine that Lucifer's grasp on individuality and emotion is both a far cry from that of a human, yet very close to it as well. While he very much understands emotions, he doesn't process them like a person would. Lucifer feels joy when a world is "liberated". Lucifer feels sorrow when someone has decided to side with God. The stimuli that cause an emotional reaction within him tend to be very grand, as if his emotions are somewhat dull compared to a human. It takes a huge achievement or loss to cause his emotions - his true, genuine feelings - to emerge and make him feel the need for them to be expressed.

But despite this, the feelings he does express are very genuine, and he has no qualms showing honesty. He tells Aleph that:

"I am the lord of the abyss. I cannot just sit idly by and watch my people die. When Satan appears, I intend to fight him in one final battle, and no matter what…I must win! No matter the cost...even if it means my own death, I cannot let my subjects be slaughtered like so many cattle.“

Sounding oddly altruistic for the Devil, He who is the root of all evil, according to some. Yet in his dying moments he shows the player that these feelings are entirely genuine.

"Aleph...you were strong enough to defeat me. Destroy the Kuzuryu, and destroy Eden, just as you destroyed me. Do not let my people or yours be destroyed...it is your destiny to protect them..."

The thing about pride is, for those who truly embody it, tarnishing that pride is almost unimaginable; with Lucifer's pride came honor. It seems as if since the denizens of Hell accepted him after his former ones in Heaven abandoned him, he's watched over them ever since. This extends to the player and humanity as well. Even if the world of chaos is one of destruction and death, it's what he truly believes humanity needs. There's benevolent intent behind his actions as he believes this is the right course of action, and considering this, those who work alongside him to achieve his goals are rewarded in that regard. They earn what he considers to be true freedom, and to someone like Lucifer, there is no greater reward.

"The gods who had been condemned to the Abyss so long ago have been freed, and a new golden age on Earth is coming once more... One where the gods and humans live together, side-by-side in harmony! You have done a great service for us, and I solemnly vow not to violate the trust you have placed in me. I shall not rest until both my subjects and you humans enjoy a level of freedom you have only dreamed about!"

But with Pride also comes arrogance. The origin of Lucifer's individuality was his pride, meaning it's always at the core of his being. While he is tolerant and amicable with most, those who side with law themed ideals tend to face the darker half of his personality. He'll treat them with scorn, ridiculing their beliefs and ideals as foolish and worthless. His view of order is narrow minded - true to an extent - but he very much deals in black and white morality. The moment he sees someone as a lost cause, hopefully bound by the false promises of the lord, he'll abandon them instantly without the slightest hesitation.

"Humans truly are weak creatures when you come down to it…(…) You are indeed strong! Strikingly so! But you are simply forgetting your fear, forgetting the truth and forgetting yourselves. (…) At the very least, I, Lucifer, will remind you what true fear is!”

This ties in with the point earlier of his dulled emotions. Any attachment he forms with someone, no matter how strong (excluding those who help him fully "liberate" a world), can easily be dismissed if need be. His moprals are very loose in that sense, as he'll kill whoever he has to, no matter the past they hold.

But as a result of his rebellion, with arrogance came a degree of wisdom, a spark that would be nourished over countless years of the life he's lived. It would be wrong to say that Lucifer is a narcissist to any extent of the word; perhaps once it applied, but his fall from Heaven humbled him greatly. His interactions with humanity also affected this, as he finds more often than not certain humans do gain tremendous power enough to even best him - and that's something he can acknowledge. Once he's been defeated, he won't deny they got the better of him, or throw some kind of tantrum.

"I had originally thought that we were superior to you, I am starting to realize that may have been a mistaken assumption on my part. We and you are just...different, that's all. The more I think about it, the more that seems to be the case... It was definitely that way before, but you're the main players in this world. The world may be ours but you are the ones at its core. Are we nothing but supporting characters? Hmm..."

This understanding is what makes him more than both Angel and Devil. He considers himself both, but doesn't fully commit to either identity, believing himself to be something completely different. He embraces his angelic heritage to an extent, acknowledging it in the Chaos ending of the first SMT.

"However, be forewarned...the God of Law is neither destroyed nor dead. He is the true destroyer, silencing the world by imposing his yoke upon it...in truth, I am no more than a single part of him, albeit one he has discarded. What does that mean? Young humans, consider that question well..."

While he may distance himself from Heaven, he still identifies to an extent not only as an Angel, but as what was formerly a part of Him. Yet as the very first being to disobey God and question His authority, he acknowledges that this has branded him as the Ultimate Darkness. The Roof of all Evil. The King of all Demons. He embraces this side of him as well, because in a sense this is how humans are - capable of both good and evil, wonderful and terrible actions. In a way, it might be why he feels like he understands the plight of humanity more than any other. (Even more than humanity itself.)

But with such a title comes reputation. He understands that in any given universe, it's entirely possible people might recognize him and form an immediate bias, so in order to mingle amongst others alternate identities are needed.

This is where Hikaru comes in.

Hikaru is nothing more than a role to play, likened to a character an actor is playing. (In a sense I'm roleplaying a roleplayer goddamn.) She's cheerful, bright and very informed on the supernatural...but this can cause a weird sense of dissonance if she's discussing morbid topics while smiling and giggling. She carries herself in such a way that she appears friendly and honest with everyone, all of which is designed to achieve one aim: trust. She wants people to lower their guards around her in order to facilitate her machinations. However, it's important to realize she doesn't consider this deception necessary, or that it was formed from a need to deceive to gain what she wants - Lucifer's perfectly happy to be honest about his beliefs and what he wants, but he wants to do this without the bias other people will feel towards him as the devil itself. Hikaru will honestly tell people

I'LL FINISH THIS EVENTUALLY BUT LOOK LONG STORY SHORT THE ENTIRE HIKARU PERSONALITY IS A FARCE SHE MAY AS WELL NOT EXIST
